This applies to Bulk Power Consumers like Estate, Hospitality facilities, Corporate Facilities, Religious Centres, Event Centres etc
You can save 10-50% on your electrical energy services cost if you invest in power factor correction. See mathematical analysis later in this piece.
Breaking it down literally, normal electrical operations is at 0.8pf. Best practices is from 0.9pf. Your Kwh rate at 0.9pf is probably around N40, at 0.8pf kwh is probably N49 already indicating you pay an extra N9 per kwh for operating at 0.8. When you operate lower at 0.7pf, you probably pay extra N15 and at 0.6pf, you could be paying extra N22 per kwh.
Check your bill for your last total KWH and you will see the need to modify your electrical system.
Whenever an Electrical System load is predominantly Inductive (sorry for another electrical Jagon) meaning you have more of load contents like Airconditioners which is over 75% of the load content, lift equipment, hand driers and various pumps and you don't have a power factor correction equipment incorporated, you are automatically spending 10-50% more on your energy budget whether it is public power, or generator power.
Understanding Power Factor Correction (PFC) is the first step towards experiencing the many benefits associated with good power factor. Poor power factor means poor electrical efficiency and in turn, the lower the power factor, the higher the apparent power drawn from the distribution network.
One side effect of this is higher capital expenditures and operating costs for distributors, which in many cases is passed on to the consumer in the form of higher tariff rates.
Why Promote this product after the huge investment in power distribution equipment and cabling.
The answer is that if your facility is currently not having a power factor corrector, you are spending at least 8 to 10% more in your power deployment in a normal system and could be 20 to 50% in a very dysfunctional electrical systems with old lift, old air-conditioning, old pumps, old factory equipment etc.
Can you now imagine the savings monthly and yearly?
For example:
A typical Bank branch is about 100kW or 125kVA at 0.8pf and 105.3kVA at 0.95pf. The kVA Being 133.3 at 0.75pf.
In view of load profiling the bank may be off peak from 7-9am at 50kw, peak 80kw from 9-3pm, off peak 50kw from 3-7pm and be on 27kw over night till 7am.
All adding up to 904kwh daily. At 0.8pf, the bank will pressure their profit margin by N9 penalty charge x904kwh being N8,136.00 daily, about N253,000 monthly and about N3million yearly.
For a technical approach see below.
100 kW load at a PF of 0.8= 75 kVAr
100 kW load at a PF of 0.9 = 49kVAr
The extra kVAr drawn from the supply is:
75kVAr – 49kVAr = 26 kVAr
26 x Npenalty charge per hr x 24hrs= Npenalty perday
A typical bank branch office with 100kVA load profile may be charged this extra monthly unless the system is improved with adequately sized Power Factor Corrector.
Assume the Power factor correction unit will cost installed about N60,000 per kVAr
Therefore 26.0 kVAr x N60000 = N1,170,000
Payback period = N1,560,000 divided by N253,000 = about 6months.
In about 6 months, the cost for power factor correction is recovered and any further penalties are avoided for the life of the electrical installation. Any further savings then become profits that add to the company’s bottom line.
Imaging this as savings or additional profit in over 100 branches.
Note: This example is for illustration purposes only. Actual savings will vary from installation to installation.

PFC is a means of providing compensation locally to reduce this excess power draw which can result in electricity bill savings, reduced system losses and optimal utilization of energy resources and transformer capacity.
HIWORKS can help size, commission and maintain your chosen PFC system. With the flexibility to suit your application requirements.
We shall also require to carry out your electrical audit to see the energy use trend and use some of the information to develop the power factor capacity for the power system.
We shall be available for further clarification of the development.
