Today, in Nigeria, petrol is averaging N600 per liter. 

The smallest 0.8kW petrol generator called 'I pass my neighbor' will consume N300 per hour at full load. With 10 hours daily, that will be N3000 worth of fuel consumption. 

In a month, the cost of consumption will be N90,000 and also N1,080,000.00 yearly.

 

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on April 3, 2024, raised the electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily. Customers in this category are said to be under the Band A classification. The increase will see the customers paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66, a development that has been heavily criticized by many Nigerians, considering the immediacy of the tariff hike and the current hardship in the land. Above are the realities; public power provider guarantees no one 24 hours and what is mentioned is still ideal of some sort.

Hence, for a 24-hour power supply, with the smallest genset earlier mentioned (0.8kW), and 4 liters running for eight hours for a new generator, the cost is N2400 for 0.8kW x 5 hours (4.0kWh). That will be N600 per kWh. 

Obviously, the cost is more than the highest kWh charge by any public power provider in Nigeria and most independent power provider (IPP) solution providers.

Diesel cost (which must include Depreciation & maintenance costs) will be around N400 -N600 per kWh or more. It is important to factor in depreciation & maintenance for diesel gensets.

The truth is, that the equivalence of that sum in the Solar inverter will last for at least two years or longer. That is 4nos batteries 12V 200AH Lead Acid batteries... With different product types and benefits... 

 Lead Acid batteries can be flooded or dry. They can be dry valve regulated or gel. Or absorbed glass mat. AGM.

 When your lifestyle is such that you are only home at night most time, your solution may be 40% less expensive than your counterpart with a similar load profile because you will ONLY be storing energy in the daytime.

 When your need is to support office operations from 8 to 5 pm, your acquisition cost will be less expensive compared to doing 24 hours or for residential apartments.

When we ship from China it is different. Most of the products that we use today and indeed most of the brands we are used to and patronize credit China for their production.

Check around your house to see what is written on the body of all your appliances or the boxes. You will likely find made in China on one out of three items.

China is graced with the right environment, across the value chain of production; their government enabling of their industrial sector is too attractive for anyone looking at mass production of just about anything.

The cost of production of an item can go from   $100 to $30 when you order from 500 pieces to 5000 pieces.

You can't beat their ease of logistics for moving the produced goods from their factories to the various countries' local ports.

This is why most of the investment in production starts the first phase in China and the packaging phase in the respective countries selling the goods.

When you have the benefit of that whole information, it becomes laughable when people say Chinese products are synonymous with inferiority.

The popular parlance is 'is it original or China ' or you are 'enlightened ' by the vendor that there is available for you at different prices two similar products; the costlier being the original version, the cheaper being the China version and you are shown. When you closely observe, you will note that one is actually a superior quality than the other. 

The truth is that most times both products shown to you originated from China, and sometimes the same company made the two or different companies in the same China Province or State as we know it here.

What is different is the SPECIFICATION given to the manufacturers to produce what is seen to be original and that given to the manufacturer to produce the version that is tagged inferior or China.

Sometimes, the variances of inferior quality may be up to ten in the market and selling at various cost differentials.

You might have been a victim of that before where you actually went to the market to buy a Panasonic appliance and you were given PANSONIC or PANASUNIC or PANTRONIC or worse and this items will look exactly the same until you get home and discover ' if it's not panadol, it is not the same as panadol'.

Now that you know that PANASONIC AND PANTRONIC originated originally from China and the cost differential of production of both may not be that considerable. It may just be that PANASONIC came from Japan, with original production in China or it came from an EU country but the original production in China.

The implication of that being an extra cost of logistics and taxes on the products before being shipped to the end-users countries.

In monetary terms, a product routed through Japan to Africa will incure cost of shipping and taxes to Japan, extra cost of labour and taxes for packaging in Japan and cost of shipping to Africa.

The cost savings when produced goods are shipped straight from China to end-users countries may sometimes be up to 50%  than when they are routed through the country of note for the label on the appliance.

Sometimes the savings are so notable on a construction cost when the building materials are shipped from the original equipment manufacturers in China, or Turkey or India or anywhere else.

That is one of the reasons countries that produce what they consume are stronger economies.

The only challenges to the exploration of this cost savings strategy for construction are access to the original equipment manufacturers(OEMs) and the lead time of up to 90days and in some cases up to 150days.

If the window of 90days to 150days exist to get the specifications right, to get the right Chinese factory, make necessary payment, commence production, ship finished goods and deliver the goods to the end-users, the savings between buying original goods and exploring this window for original quality products may sometimes be about 30-50%.

Imagine buying a piece of land and erecting a building on it, just for the government to come some years after, and tell you to move out, with claims that your building is illegal because it is sitting on government property.

All these can be prevented if you know the status of the land you are investing in before sealing the transaction.
This brings us to *Land Classification*

Land can be classified as either free or acquired. A parcel of land is considered free if the government has not indicated any interest whatsoever in that land.
Such land is safe to buy because the title on the land can be perfected without issues.

In most cases, such lands will either have a gazette, a C of O or a governor’s consent.

Now that you understand what it means for land to be free, you should also know that all lands that fall within areas that are designated as urban areas are under government acquisition until deemed committed or free.

There are two types of acquisition;
*1. committed acquisition* and
*2.general acquisition*

*Committed acquisition*
A parcel of land is said to be under committed acquisition when the government has indicated an intention to use that land for a specific purpose such as provision of amenities.
Such lands belong to the government and can never be available for use by individuals.

If you purchase land that is under committed acquisition, it will be impossible for you to perfect your land title and you’ll only be occupying the land until the government comes to kick you out.

*General acquisition*
Lands that are under “general acquisition or “global acquisition can later be confirmed ‘free’ or ‘committed’.
A land under general acquisition can become free by a process called *excision*.

“Excision is a process whereby the government releases a portion of an expanse of land that is not committed"

If a parcel of land that was formerly under acquisition becomes excised, it is then considered free and becomes gazetted.

The gazette then becomes the title on the land and such land is safe to buy because a proper title can be processed on the land.

A second case where lands under general acquisition can be released is if an individual purchased a land that was under acquisition without going through an excision process.

Such lands can go through another process called “ratification” or “regularization” in which the land owner pays for the land to be ratified or regularized.

The only conditions in this case are that the land in question must not fall within a committed area and that the purpose for which the land was bought does not disrupt the original plan of the state.

Conditions for ratification may differ from state to state.

Well,  can you drive with your windows up and Ac off? then you will have much more savings.

Have you ever put your hand out of the window, while the vehicle is on top speed, remember the wind pressure pulling your hand backward?

That is exactly what the back wind screen of the vehicle would do when your windows are down at top speed.

Your vehicle will be exerting more energy to create movement against weight of the vehicle and negative air pressure caused by the windows open.

That wind pressure can actually bring the car speed down if allowed and to a halt.

When your windows are up, the manufacturers of vehicles have designed body shapes to minimize the effect of the wind pressure,  but that is compromised when windows are down.

If you could drive with windows up and Ac off,  it could only result in much more savings, but if you can't, windows down at top speed is a ⛽ gulper.

For fuel efficiency, windows up at top speed and use ac for comfort,  inflate tyres to recommended pressure, buy gas from trusted stations, don't overload culturally, and service your engine as at when due and use recommended engine oil.

..and pleeeeeese don't ask me if I follow all these rules...

The Importance of Rating a Generator Engine Correctly

When looking to purchase a generator the first thing to consider is the intended use. It may seem obvious what power rating is required for an application but there are a number of factors to consider before purchasing a generator. The guidelines set forth in this article will better explain the proper application of generator drive engines in AC Generator Set installations.

Standby Power Rating

Standby power rated generators are the most commonly rated generator sets. Their primary application is to supply emergency power for a limited duration during a power outage. With standby rated generators there is no overload capability built into the units. It is important to note that standby rated generators, under no circumstances, should run in conjunction with a public utility source.

Standby power rating should be applied to the unit where public utility power is available. The typical rating for a standby engine should be sized for a maximum of 80% average load factor and roughly 200 hours per year. This includes less than 25 hours per year of running time at the standby rating. Standby power ratings should never be applied except in true emergency outage situations. Predetermined outages with the utility company, under UL guidelines, are not considered emergency outages. Manual load shifts for testing purposes can be performed with most automatic transfer switches.

Prime Power Rating

Prime power rated generators should be used in applications where the user does not purchase power from a public utility. Prime power applications fall under two distinct categories:

Indefinite Running Time

The prime power rating is the maximum power accessible at the variable load for an unlimited number of hours per year in a variable load setting. It is not advisable that the variable load exceed 70% average of the prime power rating during any operational period of 250 hours. If the engine is running at 100% prime power, yearly hours should not exceed 500. Overload situations should be avoided however a 10% overload capability is available for a 1 hour period within a 12 hour cycle of operation.

Limited Running Time

Prime power is accessible for a limited number of hours in non-variable load situations. Limited prime power is intended for circumstances where power outages are expected, such as a planned utility power reduction. Engines in generator sets may operate up to 750 hours per year at power levels less than the maximum prime power rating. In these situations it is important to never exceed the prime power rating. The end user should be aware that constant high load use will reduce the life of any engine. It is recommended that any application requiring over 750 hours per year that the engine be continuous power rated.

Continuous Power Rating

Continuous power rating is used in applications where supplying power is at a constant 100% load for an unlimited number of hours each year. Continuous power rated units are most widely used in applications where the power grid is unreachable. Such applications include mining, agriculture or military operations.

Elevations and Temperature’s Effect on Power Rating

Elevation and temperature are factors to consider before rating the engine. The engine may be operated at 3,000 ft. of altitude and at a temperature of 100° F without deration for standby power rating. For prime power rating the engine may be operated at 5,000 ft. of altitude and at a temperature of 100° F without power deration. For continuous duty operations at higher altitudes, the engine should be configured to limit performance by 3% per 1,000 ft. of altitude and 1% per 10° F inlet air temperature.

More information on power ratings is available under guideline ISO 3046, specifically BS 5514 and DIN 6271. It is always best to consult an electrical contractor or a generator specialist to determine what generator and rating best suits your specific needs.
